The pastel fronts of Vieux Lyon reflected in flat water, with Fourvière above. Best when the river is still and the fog has not yet lifted, which in this city is most winter mornings.
Croix-Rousse et ses traboules

Steep, narrow and unusually vertical for a French city. The traboules — covered passages cut through the buildings — are the one thing here that photographs like nowhere else, and several are in private hands.

When to visit Lyon for photos
The two rivers hold morning fog from October to February, which is a gift rather than a problem — the Saône quays under mist need no other idea. June evenings stay usable until half past nine. August empties out and much of the old town closes.

Yes, and it is most of what we do here. We need a room roughly three metres by four with a plain wall, and about thirty minutes per person. Nobody has to leave the building.
