Rules on photography during the rite are set by the parish and vary considerably: some allow free movement, some restrict you to the back, some ask that nothing be taken during specific moments. The photographer contacts the church beforehand rather than discovering the rule mid-ceremony, and adjusts the plan accordingly.

Three hours covers the ceremony and the gathering afterwards, because the second half is where most of the photographs people actually keep are made — the ceremony is formal and short, the lunch is where the family is. Eighty retouched photographs reflect that split.

The group portrait of the whole family is arranged deliberately, usually straight after the ceremony while everyone is still in one place and still dressed. Leave it until later and half the guests have gone. The private gallery follows within 72 hours, ready to share with the family who could not attend.
