Photographing in the Jardin public

Every city needs one location that works with a pushchair, in drizzle, at short notice. In Bordeaux this is it.

When the light is right

  • Spring

Morning across the pond, before the paths fill. The trees are thin enough in April to let light onto the lawns.

  • Summer

The old trees give real shade through the middle of the day, which makes this the reliable Bordeaux location in July and August.

  • Autumn

The best month is November, when the plane trees turn and the low sun comes through them along the main walk.

  • Winter

Bare and quiet, and the pond takes reflections better without leaves. Gates close early: check the hour before booking late.

The guide

The dependable one

Most locations in Bordeaux have a condition attached. The quays need light, the water mirror needs the mirror to be running, the vineyards need a car and a season.

The Jardin public has no condition. It is open, level, green, sheltered by mature trees, ten minutes from the centre on foot, with gates on four sides and parking near two of them.

That makes it the answer for every session where something else is already difficult: a newborn, a grandparent, a forecast, a two-year-old.

What it looks like

An English-style garden rather than a French one, so it is informal: winding paths, irregular lawns, a serpentine pond with an iron footbridge across it, and trees old enough to arch over the main walks.

The footbridge and the pond are the two frames people remember. The rest is background — good, soft, green background, which is exactly what a family session needs and exactly what a monument cannot give.

Weather

The tree cover here is the practical point. In light rain we keep working; under the plane trees the ground stays dry for a surprising length of time and the light goes soft and even.

In heavy rain the bandstand and the café give somewhere to wait, and showers in Bordeaux rarely last long. This is the location we move a session to when the quays are unworkable, rather than cancelling.

What it suits

Family sessions first and foremost. Maternity sessions, for the level ground and the benches. And couples who would rather have trees than architecture behind them.

For the city itself the Place de la Bourse does that job better, and the two combine well in one hour since they are a short walk apart. Prices are on the rate card.

Questions about this location

Is it manageable with a pushchair?

Entirely. The paths are firm, level and wide, there are gates on all sides, and there is a café in the middle. It is the least demanding location on our Bordeaux list.

Does it work in the rain?

Better than the quays. The tree cover is dense enough to keep working in light rain, and the bandstand gives somewhere to stand out of it while a shower passes.

Is the botanical section worth including?

For a change of texture, yes — glasshouses and ordered beds against the informal English layout of the rest. It is small and takes ten minutes.
